The 12 Hours of Endurance is a new event for 2005.
There are three categories: solo, two-person co-ed team, and
a four-person open division team. This event will introduce athletes
to the great summer outdoor activities in Park City,
and it is meant to lay the foundation for team members to start their journey
into the sport of team endurance racing.
This event also allows experienced team members to fine-tune their skills.
On July 2 racers began arriving at the National Ability center by 5:30 a.m.
Some used the paved parking lots while other went into the fields
to set up their tents.
By 6:50 a.m. all first lap racers placed their bikes at the top of the dirt road about 500 ft. away from the starting line.
The energy was building and adrenaline was flooding the area.
While racers eagerly awaited the start, the event promoter gave his last words of encouragement.
The whistle blew at 7:00 a.m. and the racers began The 12 Hours Of Endurance,
a journey that stared with running uphill to pick up their bikes.
In all three categories there was endless competition for 12 hours.
There was drama, excitement, and mostly a lot of fun.
The racecourse, a 10 mile loop with 1300 ft. of elevation gain,
was fast and challenging and the racers quickly spread out creating
smooth sailing, or biking, as it were!!
Here are the results from this exciting event:
In the solo race there was a battle between two distinct leaders,
David Harris from Durango Colorado and a local racer Todd Tanner from Herriman, Utah.
After 13 incredible laps David Harris took first place finishing at 6:17:38 p.m., while Todd finished his last lap at 6:45:15 p.m.
Park City legendary endurance racer Cyndi Schwandt won solo female category finishing 9 laps by 6:29:49 pm.
The duo race was just as exciting and tough as the solo race.
There was unbelievable competition between two teams,
men’s team White Pine Touring with Chris Peters and Thane Hall,
and the co-ed team, Team Julie and Heinrich who’s racers were Julie Minahan and Heinrich Deters.
Throughout the whole race first place bounced back and forth between the two teams.
By the end the men’s team won with 14 laps at 6:11:02.p.m. Team Julie and Heinrich finished less then 4 minutes behind.
Third overall place in the duo category went to Christy Sport Team with 14 laps finishing by 6:59:18 p.m.
First in the female duo category was Team Sugar from White Pine Touring (Stacy Newton and Cathy Morton) with 11 laps at 6:30:07 p.m.
The 4-person team competition was also very close and tough.
In the men’s category the winning team was Three Oranges and a Dog (Chad Wassemer, Reed Abbott, Richard Abbott, Bob Saffell),
who finished with 15 laps at 6:28:13 p.m.
Second place went to men’s single speed team Pedro (Chris Holland, Doug Kast, Jeff Martinez, Steve Ressagno),
who also did 15 laps and finished just 12 minutes after at 6:40:52 p.m.
Third place went to Jans Boys Team (Todd Henneman, Kevin Holliday, Jason Travis and Julian Gasiewski) with 14 laps by 6:22:39 pm.
The female teams competition was just mind blowing. Two teams of very close friends Jans Girls (Roxanne Toly, Bethany, Elson, Pam Hanlon
and Paula Hudson) and Vintage Wine (Lynn Ware-Peek, Tanya Swenson, Susie Graves and Carolyn Frankenburg) competed furiously till the wire.
Jans Girls came in ahead of Vintage Wine just by 13 seconds completing 13 laps at 6:45:24 pm.
The fire fighters brought some fire to the competition as well.
The team of Park City Fire Fighters outlasted the firefighters from West Valley,
dousing their dreams for victory.
Team OF’s, guys over 50 years old (Stewart Willason, Rad Dye, Gary Hennings and Howard Schatz) were in a league of their own, completing 12 laps and finishing at 7:05:06 pm.
Just when cut off time was announced at 6:10 pm for the last lap a huge storm with rain, wind and dust started,
but it didn’t affect the enjoyment and fun of the competition.
You just should have been there by the finish line to see the trill
of the screaming and dancing in the rain Jans Girls celebrating the 13-second victory.
I am happy to report that by organizing this event in conjunction with the National Ability Center,
we raise the awareness of this great non-profit organization and
$625 from the site fee will go towards biking programs for the disabled.
